A series of historical photos which provide a look into Maroonage, or Maroon communities; the forming of semi-independent,self governing communities by escaped slaves in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. These communities were typically located in inaccessible areas such as forests, swamps, and mountains. Also known as quilombos, mocambos, palenques, and mambises, maroon, which comes from the word cimarron, meaning "fugitive" became the standard definition.
