What is this a sketch of?
What do the subjects faces say about their mood, or feeling?
Why do they look like this.
Do they seem to be aware of their fate?
What does this sketch say about the nature of the enslaved African family?
How does this sketch tell a story about the time period from which it emerged?

ReplyDeleteCaption, "Group of slave -children on board the 'Daphne' shows some of the 95 children taken from a slaving vessel in the waters off Zanzibar." The "Daphne" was a British naval vessel assigned to intercept slavers along the east African coast. Although dealing with the East African slave trade, this illustration is evocative of scenes that occurred on Atlantic slaving ships. The original of this photo was taken in 1869 and is located in the Public Record Office, London (FO 84/1310).
